Buying Accessories

To use your Pipistrelle detectors you may need optional accessories. Choosing these can be a problem as not all similar sounding products work, or fit. Hence below are our tried and tested recommendations,

mUSB-USBc cable

Assuming you have followed the advice and are using mUSB Picos (a.k.a. Micro Pico), if you want to connect your Griff or Pipistrelle to your mobile device you will need a “mUSB to USBc On The Go (OTG) cable”.

We have tried many brands, and despite some claiming they are OTG, they simply do not work. Worse still, we have found that in some cases with identical looking cables from the same manufacturer, some work, and some don’t (e.g. white NNBILI).

We have found one type of mUSB to USBc OTG cable that is 100% reliable, and available from several stores. Look for this braided 1m cable that comes in three colours: black, blue and red.

Lightning adaptor

If you to connect a older iPhone/iPad (pre 2023) to a Griff or Pipistrelle you will also need a lightning adaptor. There are two options:

  1. A USBc to Micro USB to USBc OTG cable (as above), and a USBc to Lightning OTG adaptor, OR
  2. A lightning OTG camera adaptor, and a standard USBa to MicroUSB data cable (you probably have dozens of these already, but make sure it is data & charge cable, not just a charging cable)

We recommend the first option as it allows connection to all devices if you upgrade your phone later. There are lots of USBc to Lightning OTG adaptors, but we have found that many of them do not work. Our tried and tested (and very neat) recommendation is one made by OLAF. Then also buy one of the mUSB to USBc cables above.

Wrist straps

While not essential, a wrist strap does add a nice finishing touch to your Pipistrelle device. We like the round staps that come in a multicolour pack of 50, but there are many options.

Soft shell cases

Another nice optional extra is a soft shell case to carry your device in and protect it. There are many types and sizes available, but we have found the following fit well.

The mini Pipistrelle fits nicely in a 115 x 80 x 40mm case. This is often promoted to hold a pack of cards or a mains charger. They come in many colours, and can hold a miniPip and a 1m mUSB-USBc cable in the mesh of the lid.

The bat shape of the Griff fits best in a rounded or oval case. We have tried many types including those for folding glasses and Oximeters, but have only found one that fits well.

The KZ Wired Headphones Carrying Case is ideal. It is oval and 101 x 71 x 40mm. It only comes in black and is branded, but not heavily. It fits a Griff perfectly with a 1m mUSB-USBc cable in the mesh of the lid.

The Mini Griff, Nano Pipistrelle and PippyG are all of a similar size and all fit in a square 75 x 75 x 28mm case. This is usually comes in black with a coloured zip, and is usually sold as a earbud case.

It can fit a 1m mUSB-USBc cable in with a mini Griff, but it is a bit tight for a cable and Nano Pipistrelle. The PippyG fits in snugly, and obviously does not need a cable.

Sound Output

There are basically three options for getting sound from the 3.5mm female jack on the Pipistrelle devices:

  1. Powered wired speaker with a 3.5mm Aux in
  2. Wired Headphones – There are so many options. You may find ones with 3 pole 3.5mm connectors work better than those with 4 pole connectors (usually supplied with mobile phones)
  3. A 3.5mm to Bluetooth transmitter (often selectable to receiver or transmitter via a switch), connected to wireless speakers or headphones. We have had varying success with these, and hence don’t have recommendations.

Speaker with Aux in

It is getting increasingly hard to find a portable powered speaker, that still has a Aux in. Most seem to have moved over the BlueTooth only.

There are a variety of possible speakers, but we have found this simple plug in small rechargeable model to work well. It is “loud enough”, and it is best to keep the speaker pointing away from the microphone, and the volume below 5, to avoid feedback.

Quality control is low, so do test that it works properly on arrival. We have had 2 duds in the 18 we have bought. But it is cheap!

Phil the designer of the Pipistrelle devices is very keen on this type of wearable neckband speaker. He says “they just sit perfectly round your neck and the frequency speaking guy is right inside your head“. This version supports both Aux in and BlueTooth.
